Brainstorming my FMP (09/02/2022)
In today's lesson, we were trying to think of ideas that will give us a headstart with our final project
I felt that I should brainstorm multiple ideas so that I don't panic and waste a lot of time trying to think of ideas. However, executing these ideas by myself will be very difficult for me because if I choose animation it will be difficult as I am not too good at art. Also, if I choose to make a game it will mean that ill have to watch a lot of videos on construct 3 to help me do the coding. Either way, I will have to go out of my comfort zone in order to complete this project to the highest standard possible. Myan and I came up with an animation idea related to our theme which is mythology so I'm considering doing that because it is related to the theme and it sounds really funny. The skills I would like to improve would be my art skills because this would help me in university when I choose the art side of game design. Although I would also like to build on my coding skills because this will help me get into a game design job quicker as I have a bit of both skill.
Narrative synopsis (14/02/2022)
In today's lesson, I decided to start planning for my FMP so I decided to do my narrative synopsis as it will make everything else a lot easier and quicker to do.
Audio planning (17/02/2022)
In today's lesson, I thought I would start by listing down the different types of audio and sound effects I would need for my animation. This will help me when it comes to recording foley because I have a list of the sound effects I need.
Reflective Journal Week 3 (21/02/2022)
Mythology Brainstorming
To start the project, we defined what mythology means. Then we looked at an image as a class and discussed the different types of mythologies in that image. After, we split into groups and brainstormed some other mythologies.
Mythology is defined as sacred tales or fables of a culture known as myths.
our team made a mindmap of the different mythology stories and characters. We then talked about the different mythologies which were very interesting because there were a few I did not actually know. Overall this lesson was very fun as we got to see different types of stories.
Then as a class, we decided to name some tv-series and games that relate to mythology.
Semiotics
Today's lesson was confusing at first because I could not separate the index and symbol categories. However, after doing an example analysis I became more confident in finding the differences between the two. When it came to doing the worksheet I was able to make 7 different points about one image. This made me relieved because when I first heard the word semiotics I panicked as it was the first time I ever heard of that theory.
Todorov's theory
Today's lesson was very exciting because we got to watch a movie. Also, this theory was one I had already learned in media so I found it quite easy. However, when it came to analyzing the movie and putting the information into each of the 5 narrative beats I struggled because the movie I looked at(Thor(2011)) had a different order compared to the other movies. Overall, when I first heard about this theory I thought it would be long and boring but after learning about it, I found it very interesting.
From learning all of these I have decided to make some little altercations to my animation's narrative because I feel that my initial idea will be too boring and it will not be as creative. So I have decided to not only change the order of my storyline but I would like to change how my characters act toward each other. My initial plan was to have them fight to the death but that would be boring so I want to add a little emotion to it.
script (21/02/2022)
In today's lesson, I did my script to help me with the order of my story. This helps me to plan my storyboard since I now know the order of my story and where the dialogue is
Visual Mood Board (22/02/2022)
In today's lesson, I decided to start on my visual mood board, The mood board allows me to pick out parts of images and put them with other relevant images to show what I am aiming to make and an idea of what each of my characters would look like. Also, it allows us to plan what our backgrounds would roughly look like by getting relevant images and annotating them
Reflective Journal Week 4 (28/02/2022)
Course review
In today's lesson, we started by filling out a course review sheet on how we have done so far and what we liked about what we have done so far.
Organizing work I put as 4 because I am able to decide what is more important and what needs to be done first. However, when the work becomes too much I tend to slip which costs me precious time
Animating I put a 3 because I felt that I am only able to do basic animating which is what I need to build on so that I will be able to become an animator if I struggle with being a game artist.
Coding is a 2 because I can only do the basics and I don't understand most of the coding which is what I need to build on if I want to get into a job. The more skills I have the easier it will be to get a job in the game industry.
Drawing is a 3 because I can draw simple characters but I cannot draw detailed characters. After I finish this course I would like to take art lessons so that I would be more confident with drawing detailed characters.
Audio production is a 3 because I am not very confident with planning and editing audio. The software that I use to edit the audio is quite simple but I would like to build on it so that I can be a YouTuber if I do not get the work I want.
Managing my time is a 3 because I can only manage my time in projects if I am in a group as I like to communicate with my team members about what I would like to do. I would like to build on this skill as it will really help me when I do projects in general.
2D,3D Modelling PowerPoint(02/03/2022)
In today's lesson, we started to upload the images we took in art onto a PowerPoint, then we annotated each image.
This lesson was a bit hard because I wasn't able to annotate each image in detail and I found it hard to change the sentence as we did three characters using objects.
After doing a bit of modeling and some contextual analysis, I have decided to use what I have learned to inspire me to make my animation better. Going forward, I want my animation to look a lot different from other people's, I am going to use the media texts that I have analyzed to make my ideas evolve. My initial idea was just to have Thor and the minotaur fight but I think that is boring so I want to use what I have learned so far to build. Looking forward I would like to use the knowledge I have learned from the contextual analysis to change how my animation is structured and the type of narrative.
Reflective Journal Week 5 (04/03/2022)
Proposal (07/03/2022)
In today's lesson, we started on our proposal. The teacher talked about each box and then we started to fill them out.
we had to do four boxes and in the first box, we had to write an overview of our seven units and how we think we have done on them and the skills we have acquired from those units. Then in the second box, we were supposed to write about the project concept of our Final Major Project. In the third box, we wrote about how we would reflect on our project and how we would evaluate our project. Finally, the fourth box is where our research would go and our bibliography.
Project schedule
we created a project schedule in advance so that we are organized and have an idea of what we will be doing that week
Pecha Kucha(09/03/2022)
In today's lesson, we started on our presentation. As you can see I have created a customized background for my slides because I wanted people to know that my background matches the theme and I wanted to use characters that are in my idea
This week has been very interesting because we started with our proposal which I thought would be hard but I was wrong which I'm pleased about. Then we started our Pecha Kuch which I didn't know anything about until the teacher explained it. I started on the script first as I had a good idea of what I was going to say. Then I started to design the background for my slides. My background was supposed to have mythology characters to let the audience know that the theme is mythology, but I also wanted to put characters that are relevant to my idea. Overall, I thought this week was very informative and interesting. Looking forward I would like to use the Pecha Kucha as a way to pitch my ideas to people.
Pre-production (16/03/2022)
We started by writing down all our main characters and describing them. We then decided to draw one of our main characters as a rough sketch which you can see from the first image. At the start of the lesson, I got a bit stuck as I did not know where to start.
Although when it came to drawing our character with more detail I started to get frustrated because I wanted the fingers to wrap around the weapons but that did not go as well as planned so I got a little help from the teacher which helped a lot as it started to come together. I wanted to change up the axe so it would be original and not a copy of the axe in the movies.
I decided to change how thor looks because the squash I tried to draw looked like a peanut and squash doesn't resemble anything so I decided to make thor a chili instead because he can be hot-headed and he is brave.
Feedback
My group thought that it makes sense and that it is very unique
Reflective Journal Week 6 (18/03/2022)
This week we reviewed our progress so far and how we are doing with our planning. At first, I was afraid of doing animation and I thought I should do a game. However when I had a long think about it and I thought that it would be easier for me to do an animation. It was quite easy for me to think of an idea because of the mind map we did and the media texts I looked at for my contextual analysis.
Mood Board (22/04/2022)
In today's lesson, we started to design our visual mood board. this mood board is supposed to inform people about our ideas using relevant images.
Character concepts (24/03/2022)
The first image is a draft of the front view of my main character who is thor as a chili. I thought I should use chili instead of squash because chili is hot and Thor in the first movie is hot-headed(likes to rush into things). The design is not what I hoped for because the shape of the chili doesn't look like a skinny chili.
Although, when it came to drawing the side view I struggled a lot because I had no clue on how to draw a side view. once I got a bit of help and I used this image to help me with my side view.
The second character I have created is the minotaur and the bell pepper. As you can see the first image is the front view of my minotaur, the pepper is supposed to be a head that seems to only be visible because of the stem. However, I really like the design because it actually resembles a minotaur and it looks funny.
My last character is supposed to be a berserker but in an onion form. I picked an onion for my berserker because they are strong and overwhelming. The first image is the front view of my character. the head is supposed to be an onion but will have the facial hair of a berserker. the helmet is supposed to resemble a berserker, helmet but I wanted to keep the sprout so that people know it's an onion. The second image is supposed to be a side view of my character. I really struggled with this part because I was not sure how to draw the facial hair and the helmet.
Overall this week has been very fun but also very annoying. The fun part was getting to draw my characters. However, the annoying part was drawing the side view for each character. Doing the mood board could be the best planning I have done so far because it gave me a good idea of how to set the background and the images I used for my character ideas also helped because I was able to use those images to draw my character concepts.
Reflective Journal Week 7 (02/04/2022)
During this week I will be trying to finish my storyboard
StoryBoard (02/05/2022)
The boxes I used to create the storyboard were from the previous units. I used these boxes instead of doing my own because it would take up too much time that I do not have.
The first image is the establishing shot which allows people to know where my animation is set. This was supposed to be the fifth shot but I decided to make it the first shot this makes it very clear where the whole animation is set.
I decided to split my storyboard into two pages. Here we have one out of the two pages. This helps me to draw since the boxes will be bigger. The first page was a little difficult since I did not know how to start which is why I used my script as a guide.
The last page was a lot easier since I now had an idea of how to summarise each sentence using an image.
I found it quite difficult to start my storyboard so I decided to write the description for each box and then draw it based on what it says. This helped a lot since it allowed me to not think too much about what I needed to draw. However, the teacher thought I should start my first frame with an establishing shot which made a lot of sense since people won't know where it is set. The establishing shot took quite a lot of time because I had to] make sure it looked like a long shot from up above. The most difficult part was trying to draw the characters since one was a front view and the other was a back view. Overall I'm very proud of my storyboard because I drew detailed figures instead of stickmen. Also, I was able to do all of this in two days instead of prolonging it to a week.
Background design
My plan for the background is to have it where it looks like a platformer because it would not only make it easier to animate but it would look different.
I want to make this simple but not too simple to the point where people would be disappointed. I also want to be able to finish this animation since we were unable to finish the animation as a group in our previous project.
I was able to do some research on the type of designs that I would like to add to my background. However, Asgard which is where my animation is set is a little detailed so I would like to find simple designs so that I don't have to spend too much time drawing the background.
For this background I wanted it to look more like a mountainside because it would allow me to animate it in a way that the berserkers surround Thor and the minotaur without the background looking all weird
This was supposed to be a side view of the Bifrost bridge so that it would look like my characters are walking on it. However, this is a simple sketch. I plan to ask for help so that it looks more presentable.
Reflective Journal Week 8 (09/04/2022)
Audio Planning
I have started on the planning but I have not listed down the materials I will be using, I have listed which ones I will be doing foley for and which ones I'll get online.
I would have liked to have started recording before the half term but I was busy doing my storyboard which was a good idea to spend more time on since it tells me how I should draw when animating.
Reflective Journal Week 9 (16/04/2022)
This week I am going to start on the first scene for my animation
First scene
My storyboard shows the first frame as Thor running to see what the chaos is all about, which is why I have started by drawing thor on the pathway. Drawing thor idle did not take as much time as I thought it would which made me really confident because I felt that I would be able to do the running cycle quicker.
As you can see I have used a tool called onion skin which allows me to see the previous frames without having to switch back and forth. I used the image above as a guide to help me because I had no clue on how to make a running cycle. This ended up taking 3 days for me to complete which made my confidence decrease a little since I started to worry about not being able to finish my animation in time.
I thought that the pace was too fast which is why I ask other people's opinions on what I have done so far. This was very helpful since I now know what it would look like to the audience. I wanted to get this done quickly so that I can come back to it to add some detail or refine what I have drawn. Overall, I am very Proud of what I have accomplished here because I went from having no confidence in drawing to being able to draw the legs in different positions. I now feel a lot more confident in making my other scenes.
Final first scene
I have decided to add some extra details because I thought it would look more 3D. The cape I decided to change because in art Marshal thought that it looked more like a 3/4 view instead of a side view. This was supposed to be a quick addition but the frames were separate which meant that I had to change the details on each keyframe in order for it to look consistent. I also had to edit some parts of my character in order to make the animation look smooth instead of it looking like a rough sketch. The final product of this scene may not look different from my other one but to me, this one looks a lot smoother and the legs really stand out compared to the other one. I am really proud of my final product because I used the knowledge that I received from Marshal to make my scene look smoother and 3D-like.
Next week for the first 1 to 2 days I will be Adding some buildings to my first scene because It looks quite plain and boring. Then I will be animating my second scene for the rest of the 3 days. I want to give myself as much time for each scene so that I can do it to the best of my ability without feeling stressed about not being able to finish.
Reflective Journal Week 10 (23/04/2022)
This week I will be trying to finish my second scene by Tuesday and then I will be moving on to my third scene which will be finished by Thursday
Second Scene
I used this image to guide me with my jump cycle. I decided to change the mid-air position to a simple crouch because it was easier and I can't really put the leg inside the body since it would look odd. Although, in the end, I was really proud of it because it not only makes sense but it went really well with my running animation
Final Second Scene Animation
I am very proud of this scene because I have managed to use a running cycle, a jumping cycle, and a turning animation in the same scene. In the beginning, I was thinking of not adding the turning animation but then I changed my mind because the more detail I add the more marks I will get. Also, I wanted to go out of my comfort zone more since I am so used to animating using the side view.
Next week I will be starting on my third scene because I want to try and get everything done before coloring in. I will also be trying to start on my Fifth scene since I feel that the Fourth scene will not take that long.
Reflective Journal Week 11 (30/04/2022)
Final third scene
This was supposed to be a scene where Thor confronts the Minotaur. this scene was easier than the other scenes since all I needed to do was reuse the running frame.
Final fourth scene
This was also an easy scene since I already knew how to do the running and jumping cycles, this meant that I was able to do two scenes in one day.
Reflective Journal Week 12 (06/05/2022)
The green lines are supposed to be a reference for when I animate. This is because my storyboard shows that the berserker is supposed to be in a formation. these green lines will help me to make sure they go into their formations smoothly.
Final Fifth Scene
As you can see, this is supposed to be an animated version of the formation. However, this scene was probably the most difficult scene out of all the ones I have done so far. Although the green lines helped more than I thought they would because they allowed me to figure out how far each berserker needs to go.
Reflective Journal Week 13 (13/05/2022)
Instead of snippets, I have saved it as a GIF to show that I have come this far and it also shows how my running animation is going. Even though I have not done much in this GIF but I am still happy that I have started a day earlier than I should of.
This GIF is supposed to show Thor doing an air attack on the minotaur but I spent too much time on the running and jumping so I didn't get to animate the arms moving. Although I learned something new from this lesson which was the timing of when the characters come in. in order to make Thor come in after the minotaur I used a lot of empty frames which
This helped me a lot with the berserker part, I was planning on getting the berserkers to run from their formation to ambush Thor. Even though I had a bit of help I still struggled which made me angry because I passed the deadline of when I was supposed to complete that scene. Although, I am proud of how far I have come because at the start I was really nervous about how I am going to animate the different viewpoints. I hope I can finish my animation because when I was in a group we were unable to finish our animation so I want to show the teacher that I can finish before the deadline.
Reflective Journal Week 14 (20/05/2022)
This week I decided to try and animate the berserkers front view running. I struggled a lot because I was so used to doing the side view running cycle that It took twice as long to do. since I had to do 5 berserkers I decided to reuse the running cycles. I feel like I did well with the running cycle but when you play it looks like they are dancing.
Scene One
During the coloring process, I decided to do it last which proved to be the largest mistake I have ever made in a project. Furthermore, I thought that it would be easy but then I realized that I had to color each frame. This mistake set me back by quite a bit, even though some of my scenes were small, there were 2 scenes that had about 300 to 400 frames.
Scene Two
Scene two was quite easy because I was able to reuse the running animation allowing me to save quite a bit of time. Although, I wish I had colored it in as I went because then I would have been able to color in my background to make it look complete
Scene Three
This scene was the easiest out of the other scenes. Furthermore, since this was a short scene it allowed me to do another scene in that lesson.
Reflective Journal Week 15 (27/05/2022)
Scene Four
this scene was easy since it is just one character who is running and jumping across the map. Even though I did not color in everything you can still get a sense of what is going on.
Scene Five
This scene was possibly the hardest because I had to use empty frames in order for them to run at different times. The green lines I used as a reference helped a lot since I was able to animate according to those lines. without those lines, I am pretty sure that I would have spent most of my time doing this scene. Although as soon as I figured out that I had to color each frame I decided to get straight to coloring since I knew that there are scenes that have 300 to 400 frames.
Reflective Journal Week 16 (06/06/2022)
scene 6
After doing scene 5 I started to find these scenes a lot easier since I now know how to use empty frames to decide when each character should come in. However, I wanted to push myself by getting the berserkers to do the front view running cycle, at first I really struggled because I did not know where to start. Although I managed to find an image of a step-by-step running cycle. However, as you can see it did not turn out as well as I thought, but all that count is that I tried
Scene 7
With this Scene, I thought that it was the best camera angle-wise because you can see the close-ups of the axes hitting the berserkers and you can also see the close-ups of the berserks falling into the lake. However, the part where the berserkers fell into the lake was really hard at the start because I was not sure how to make it where the berserks look like they are falling so I ended up getting help. Although, at least I know how to create a falling animation from the front view
Scene 8
Audition work
I had to make the audio on top louder as I wanted people to hear the first audio more. The second audio was supposed to be lower but not too low to the point where the audience can not hear the beat. In order to turn the audio down, I used the 4 bars symbol to turn it up or down. Since it was my first-time using audition I wanted to play around with the audio for a bit so that I can get used to the program, I was tempted to watch a tutorial but I wanted to be independent so that I can teach myself as I go.
