Contextual Analysis

 Media text analysis (24/02/2022)

In today's lesson, we used two different media texts and did a bit of contextual analysis.

Horizon zero dawn(game)

Horizon zero dawn was made in February 2017 by Guerrilla Games. The story is about a woman called Aloy who was a young hunter in a world full of machines. She goes on an adventure to find out who she really is. In this game the machine behind all of the machine's corruption is Hades. The name Hades originates from Greek mythology and is the firstborn son of Titan Kronos.

Horizon zero dawn is set in a future Earth, in a deserted colorado that has been taken over by nature. However, you have the DLC called the frozen wilds which are set in Wyoming and can be identified by the amount of snow in that area. Aloy's clothes symbolize that she is a hunter. Aloy is also represented as a person who does not give up and loves to keep the world safe. Hades is represented as this higher being who likes to bring destruction to the world.

Hades in Horizon zero dawn was the type of character who likes to pull the strings, it also matched the greek mythology description of Hades(god of the underworld) because In the game the shadow carja worship Hades and built the corruptors to help Hades to control the other machines in order to bring destruction to the world. I would say that this game is a fantastical one because it is not set in a place like Midgard(where God of war is set).

The equilibrium of horizon zero dawn  is that Aloy lives as a hunter among machines

The disruption to equilibrium in horizon zero dawn  is that  The corruptors break the peace between humans and machines by taking control of these machines and making them go against humans

Aloy recognizes the disruption when she gets attacked by the machines in an ally base while trying to get out of the base to find leads
.

Aloy attempts to repair the damage by going on a quest to find the being behind this by gathering a team to help her fight this threat. In the process, she finds out who her mom was and how they created these robots to help protect them from war. However, they turned on them because of artificial intelligence called Hades.

The new equilibrium in horizon zero dawn is that Aloy thought she destroyed hades but we find out that there is a flicker of life left and Sylen takes it for a reason we do not know. Hades is weak so he poses no threat to the world.

From this analysis, I feel that I could name the enemy as one of the bad gods and have them act like how they have been portrayed in stories. However, have a story that is not directly adapted or related to any mythology stories.

THOR(2011)

Thor was made in 2011 which was directed by Kenneth Branagh. The movie is about Thor who was supposed to be king but gets exiled for starting a war against the frost giants. However, we find out that Loki is half frost giant and is the one who let the frost giants into Asgard. The mythological figures in Thor are the frost giants who are blue beings. Then you have the destroyer who is this metal figure that fires out orange beams. Thor is set in Asgard/New Mexico

Thor thought of his father as this brave warrior who defeated the king of frost giants but when Thor grew up he finds out that his father is this fool who thinks war does not exist. Thor is represented as this superior brother because he gets to wear the armor passed on from his ancestors. Loki is represented as this mysterious character, moe like a trickster because when they start fighting the frost giants Loki looks like he is cornered but we see that it is a mirage. There are a lot of clues that link to  Mythology such as the 9 realms that are being protected by Asgard. Thor the god of thunder and Loki the trickster god.Thor(2011) is mythical because it has gods and it has mythical creatures.

The equilibrium for thor is that Jane and Eric and a woman wait in a van and are waiting for what's to be an aurora in the sky to appear. Some shadow appears and they hit that figure while trying to get away. Then Odin narrates the story of how the frost giants went to war with Odin’s warriors. They defeat the frost giant king and take away their power. Odin tells his children that one day they will have to protect that power from getting into the wrong hands. Thor becomes chosen to wield the hammer called Mjollnir.

The disruption to the equilibrium in thor is Asgard comes under attack by the frost giant(survivors). The frost giants try to take their weapon back. Luckily the destroyer takes them down. Thor decides to go to Jotunheim to teach them a lesson. After fighting the frost giants. Odin comes to the rescue to take Thor and his team back to Asgard. Odin deems Thor unworthy and banishes him to Earth. Loki finds out that he is half frost giant and asks for an explanation.

Thor's recognition of the disruption is when Loki used Odin’s death as a way to be king. We then find out that Loki was the traitor who led the frost giants into Asgard. Loki plans to let the frost giants into Asgard to kill Odin. Thor’s team goes to Earth so that they can find Thor. Thor finds out Loki lied to him. Loki then freezes the gatekeeper to let the frost giants in. Loki then uses the Bifrost to send the destroyer to kill Thor.

Thor attempts to repair the damage by getting his powers back and confronting Loki. Thor tries to stop Loki from ripping Jotunheim apart. Thor ended up breaking the bridge so that he could save the frost giants.

The new equilibrium in thor is that he saved the frost giants but ended up losing Loki and losing the passageway to visit Jane

From this analysis, I feel that in my animation I could change up the order of the story and make it structurally different from other animations.

Miles Morales: Shock Waves (comic book)

Spiderman Miles Morales was published on the 1st of June 2021 and the author is Justin A. Reynolds. the book is about a student who studies at Brooklyn visions academy. However, he is not a normal kid as we soon find out that he is spiderman. Spiderman can be a mythical character as his powers are not real which means it's all fiction. Also, he is a superhero from MARVEL that has a normal backstory compared to batman who is in Justice League, he had a sad backstory where his parents get shot and then he uses his money to become a hero who protects his city.

Geographically spiderman Miles Morales is set in Brooklyn. Miles is represented as a teen who is energetic and is attracted to danger. His dad is someone who has gotten into trouble and uses that as a way to teach his son by advising him to not look for danger as he may not be able to get out of it. Some small details that are mythical are the fact that Miles can stick onto walls and turn invisible this is an index as it shows that he is not normal. I would say that this book leans more to the fantastical side than the mythical side because it does not have anything about a god or any mythical creatures.

The equilibrium in the book is that Miles is a teen who studies at Brooklyn visions academy

The disruption in the book is that he gets bitten by a radioactive spider and gets these unknown powers.

Miles recognizes the disruption when he realizes that it is affecting his day-to-day life.

Miles attempts to repair the damage by trying to practice using  these powers so that he can use them on command

The new equilibrium is that Miles uses these powers to save people in his city. However, his dad does not accept his ways and tries to advise him to stop before he gets into something that he can't get out of.

From this analysis, I would make my main character more energetic and confident like Miles because In the comic book Miles is attracted to danger and he thinks that he is invincible which shows that he has a lot of confidence in himself, I feel that if my main character had these traits he would be unstoppable.
